Home Page Stories
Great Speaker at RB Sunrise Tonight. Our club visited to hear about Abby Pilger Boretto’s father who died in a helicopter crash in 1972 in northern Norway. Abby was just 22 months old. 20 years later, in 1993 Norwegian doctor Hans Krogstad was hunting grouse on Grytoya when he discovered a gold ring with a blue star sapphire. That is the start of an unbelievable tale that is told in a documentary called The Ring And the Mountain.

No golf on Friday, April 5!! We are helping the Poway Chamber of Commerce get the word out that due to the forecasted weather that day not being conducive to golf, the 11th Annual Mickey Cafagna Memorial Golf Classic has been rescheduled. Here are the details:
The tournament has been rescheduled to Friday, August 30th.
Please note that all golf registrations and sponsorships will automatically rollover to the newly scheduled date, and all event details (times, location, etc. will remain the same).
If you are registered to be a sponsor and/or golfer for Friday's event, your registration is still intact and will be carried over to the new event date. Questions or concerns? Please email our President, Mike Leland, at Mike@poway.com or call our office at (858) 748-0016."
So, what AREN'T you doing on Friday?? You are not golfing in the 11th Annual Mickey Cafagna Golf Classic. Stay inside and stay safe.
Kristen Delivered our Donation to the Mock Trial Students at Torry Pines High School this weekend!

Red Badger Erin was our Irish Greeter

Here is Phil receiving his Red Badge
The club met at Bernardo Winery for a Social Last Friday! A great time. Thanks @Dave Parker for setting it up and faciltating!

Here we are doing more good deeds in the world! Today we put a truck load of hygiene products that are being donated to Your Safe Place. This wonderful organization provides free services to adults, seniors, children, and teens who have or are experiencing domestic violence, family violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, or sex trafficking regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, income, zip code, and immigration status.
Help the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps make the Poway Chamber Mickey Cafagna golf tournament a huge success.
You can sign up as a sponsor or to get a foursome and play golf.
You'll be rewarded as you will meet some of our members at the hole we will sponsor.
At our meeting yesterday, Rotarian Don presented on how he and his buddies make wine and he even brought a bunch as a fundraiser for the club.
What you are seeing is the calm before the storm. Yep, we had just set up for our blood drive held with the help of the San Diego Blood Bank. We thank all who signed up to give blood. Thanks to all who helped publicize the event, our coordinators and the fabulous folks from the SD Blood Bank. We love this project. It's great to know that our little Poway-Scripps club can help so many in our region.
How would you like to start your new year by receiving a pin with two sapphires? Past president Sumedh was such a recipient in recognition of his being a Paul Harris fellow. Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition is given in appreciation to anyone who contributes, outright or cumulatively – or in whose name is contributed – a gift of US$1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, PolioPlus Partners or the Humanitarian Grants program. Thanks to our current president, Dan, for handling the honors.
We have our first project of 2024 and we are asking you to roll up your sleeve and help us help others. We have scheduled a blood drive on Jan. 18 and this is extra special to us because we can help our immediate past district governor Chuck Pretto. Chuck is battling cancer and is using platelets of which there is a shortage.

Interested platelet donors should contact the sandiegobloodbank.org/donate, go to sponsor name search, to schedule a donation. And if you want to give blood, just come to the blood drive on Jan. 18. Giving blood is a quick procedure, donating platelets is more time consuming which is why you'll want to schedule directly with San Diego Blood Bank.

What a great project! Rotary Santa and Elves delivered Christmas gifts to our adopted family last night. What an adorable family and they were VERY appreciative! Usually on these projects the mom cries but this time after seeing the family, our community service chair Karen almost cried!  :)

Check out our booty to donate to the STEP (Support the Enlisted Project) families! THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED PURCHASED TOYS FOR THE MILITARY FAMILES! I'm proud of us all!  :)
Scripps Ranch sure looks cleaned up and that is no doubt to the assistance club members provided for Scripps Ranch Clean Up Day. Members Kristin, Don and Karen helped residents unload their junk as they drove through a designated parking lot and quickly filled up dumpsters.

Lots of good things are still happening from the parade. At our 10-11 meeting, we presented the Best Marching Band award to Del Norte High School.
Members Karen and Kristin were happy to oblige Senate Minority Brian Jones with this photo op. That happens to us a lot! Newsworthy celebrities and politicians love to rub elbows with our club members.

Member Dan was doing a bang-up job trying to recruit a new member but Loki wasn't on board and only wanted the treat basket he won at the Poway Rotary Parade. Kahoots did a fine job of putting together this dog swag and knowing Loki would enjoy it made our day.

After a load of projects under our belts, it's time to socialize. Join us at Harland Brewing in Scripps Ranch for some mingling and brew drinking.
Today we are resting on our laurels and remembering the successful project we had last month at the Poway library for Feeding San Diego. Members Jeri and Karen got the job done!!
We are so excited by the strong turnout at our latest blood drive in conjunction with the San Diego Blood Bank. We were at a new location, the old Vons in Scripps Ranch and everyone was bowled over by 22 donors rolling up their sleeves to donate blood. Thanks to members Don, Jeri and Karen for handling this community service project. As for the second photo, well that deserves an explanation. Member Karen never met a stranger, and she went hog wild for this fellow who parked his Harley near the bloodmobile. She sidled up to him, asked to sit on his bike with him, yada, yada, yada, you can guess the rest and we hope to see this photo as her 2023 Christmas card. We promise you, if you join the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps, you too can have this kind of fun.
You are looking at a lot of experience reading to children here. Members Jeri and Karen spent some time at the Poway Library reading to children as part of the library's summer reading program. Be honest, don't you sort of want to read the big book with the blue pony?
We know you are wondering what's new with the upcoming Poway Rotary Parade. You will recall that it will be held Sept. 9 and it is pet friendly. How friendly, you ask? Well, Kahoots has added some special things by donating gift baskets to add fun to the Pet Parade. Folks can register on https://powayrotaryparade.org and the Pet Parade award categories are:
Most Unique Pet [Pet Parade] - Poway 4-H
Best Float + Pet [Pet Parade] - Bailey
Best Dressed Pet [Pet Parade] - Buddy
Summer is Here
We were able to reap the benefits of what we sowed when we attended the June 9 sponsorship picnic for the Scripps Ranch Symphony in the Park concert series.  We were proud to continue our sponsorship to this fun and family friendly community event. We were treated to a delicious Mexican dinner & great music, and best of all, swallowship.
That's just our way of having an adult beverage and enjoying each other's company.
